Introduction to Electrolysis

San Diego professional hair removal services near La Jolla, CA. PCOS expert services.

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved permanent hair removal method. Electrolysis is often sought after for its effectiveness in permanently removing unwanted hair, making it a popular choice for those looking for a long-term solution.

How Electrolysis Works:

A sterile, one-time-use probe is gently inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle alongside the hair in the desired treatment area. A measured amount of energy is then released via the probe into the hair follicle to eliminate the source of growth. Once the probe is in place, a small electrical current is applied to the follicle through the probe. The insertion of the probe into the follicle should not be felt but you may feel the application of the current.

Types of Electrolysis:

  • Galvanic Electrolysis: This method creates a chemical reaction in the hair follicle, destroying the hair root.

  • Thermolysis: Also known as short-wave, this method uses heat to destroy the hair root.

  • Blend Method: This combines both galvanic and thermolysis, using both heat and chemical reaction to destroy the hair root.

Targeting Hair Growth Cycles:

Electrolysis works on all types of hair and stages of growth, however, to achieve the best results, have the targeted hair treated when it is in its anagen (growth) phase.

Permanency:

Electro-epilation is considered a permanent hair removal method because it destroys the hair papilla and the germinal cells in the bulge area of the targeted hair follicles. Once the roots of these follicles are destroyed, they cannot produce new hair.

Versatility and Suitability:

Suitable for all hair and skin types, including light-colored hair (which laser hair removal can't always effectively target).

Session Length and Frequency:

The length and frequency of sessions vary based on the area being treated, the client’s hair density, and other individual factors. Most clients need multiple sessions over an extended period of time to achieve their desired results.

Safety and Side Effects:

Electrolysis treatments are generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. Please note that normal skin reactions following electrolysis treatments include temporary redness and swelling at the treatment site.

Post-Treatment Care

What to Expect - Normal Reactions

  • Redness and slight swelling may occur at the targeted area(s), but they usually disappear after an hour or two. If these reactions last longer than two hours, you can apply ice wrapped in plastic to the treated area(s) to reduce the redness and swelling.

  • If a tiny scab appears, do not touch, rub, scratch or squeeze the treated area(s).

  • If milia or whiteheads appear, apply a dab of calamine lotion to the area and the fluid will dry them up.

Cataphoresis or High Frequency Post-Treament

After your electrolysis session, I will apply a soothing gel or cream to your face and then use a special device to perform either a cataphoresis treatment or a high frequency treatment on the areas that received electrolysis. These treatments use a mild electrical current to help calm your skin, soothe any irritation, and close your pores. They are also anti-bacterial and germicidal. These procedures are very gentle and are designed to help your skin recover faster after receiving electrolysis.

We use hypo-allergenic skincare products that will leave your skin smooth and glowing.

What To Avoid on the Treated Area(s) for the First 24 Hours:

  • No perfume or alcohol-containing products

  • No deodorant/antiperspirant

  • Do not apply make-up

  • If work was done on the face, neck or hairline, use a fresh pillowcase

  • Avoid working out/sweating

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing on the treated area(s)

  • Avoid excessively hot showers

Further Precautions

  • Avoid exposure to the sun or tanning beds for at least two days after electrolysis. If you must be out in the sun, wear sun block of at least SPF30 and reapply frequently.

  • Wait three to five days before using hot tubs, saunas or pools.

Post-Treatment Recommended Skincare

  • Blot the treatment area(s) lightly with an antiseptic such as alcohol-free Witch Hazel

  • After gently cleansing the treatment area, apply Aloe Vera gel, Yi-ZhiBaume, or Bacitracin Ointment

We educate our clients on the best post-treatment skincare products so they have safe and effective treatments.
